Business days (also called working days) are the non-weekend, non-holiday days when most companies and organizations operate. Calculating business days between dates is essential for payroll, project timelines, legal deadlines, and financial reporting. But with varying weekends and holidays across regions, manual calculation can lead to costly mistakes. Use this free business day calculator to get accurate, region-aware results instantly.

Best Practices for Accurate Business Day Calculation

Not all holidays are the same everywhere. US federal holidays differ from state or international holidays. Double-check with your HR team or a regional holiday calendar to ensure you aren’t missing local observances—especially for global payroll or cross-border projects.

In most countries, business days are Monday to Friday. But in some regions (Middle East, parts of Asia), weekends may be Friday-Saturday or even Thursday-Friday. Adjust your settings according to your business calendar.

Our calculator covers the most common US holidays, but company-specific or regional holidays (such as floating holidays or local observances) may not be included. For legal or payroll deadlines, refer to your organization’s official calendar.

For legal filings, payroll, or time-sensitive projects, always double-check your business day calculation against regional rules and official calendars. Automated tools speed up the process but should be verified for high-stakes tasks.

Business day calculations are vital for accurate payroll processing, project milestone tracking, contract fulfillment, and compliance with legal deadlines. Use this tool to support—but not replace—your official processes.

Business Day Calculator FAQ

A business day is typically any official working day of the week, most often Monday through Friday, excluding weekends and public holidays. However, definitions can vary by country, industry, or organization. For example, banks may observe additional holidays, and some countries have Friday-Saturday or Sunday-Thursday work weeks. Always check your official calendar for precise definitions.

When "Exclude common holidays" is checked, the calculator automatically omits major US federal holidays such as New Year's Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. If a holiday falls on a weekend, the observed weekday is excluded. For other countries, company-specific, or floating holidays, you may need to adjust your counts accordingly. Custom holiday support is coming soon.

This calculator uses the standard US Monday–Friday work week and common US federal holidays. While it is a great reference, business days vary globally (some countries work Sunday–Thursday, for example). For non-US calculations, uncheck holiday exclusion or validate with your local/regional calendar.

If both dates are the same and that day is a business day (not a weekend or excluded holiday), the result is 1 business day. If the date is a weekend or holiday, the result will be 0. This allows you to check if a single date is a valid business day for deadlines, payroll, or project milestones.

Our tool reliably covers major US holidays and handles observed days (when a holiday falls on a weekend). However, company-specific, religious, or local holidays may not be included. For legal or payroll purposes, always review your organization’s official list or consult your HR department.

This calculator counts whole business days only. For partial days (e.g., half-days, split shifts), you’ll need to adjust your total manually. Many organizations have their own rules for counting partial business days; always refer to your internal HR or payroll guidelines for specifics.
